Sophie Zénon, was born in 1965. Her family have northern Italian origins. After different jobs : bookseller, journalist for a French tv channel, writer and editor in a French photographer press agency, she became a free-lance photographer and lives in Paris. She works for herself on her personnal projects, but works also for the french and the international press, for different institutions and has exhibit in France and abroad. Sophie studied history and ethnologie at the “Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes“ in Paris, specializing in Shamanism in Northern Asia. She became a photographer in 1996 starting with a huge photographic work on Mongolia which is is a work still in progress. She travelled all around the country, living with nomadic breaders, going anywhere in different seasons. She is now working on the capital Oulan-Bator and its changing. In 2000 and 2002, she went to the Amur River (East Siberia) to prepare a photographic work on the relationship between the fishermen (indigeneous people) and this river. Her images, specially her work about Siberia and Mongolia, represent her interest for wide espaces and native people. They also show Sophie’s continuous research on mankind and its relashionship with nature and the sacred. , and specially on indigeneous people and on the recognition of their fundamental rights. In 1999 she received a prize for this work with a special mention at the Prix Kodak of the Critics. She also received a grant in 2000 with “Chroniques Nomades“.In 2001, she managed a photographic project between France and Mongolia, with the support of the French ministry of foreign affairs. Sophie’s pictures are often published in French magazines (Libération, Le Monde, Le Monde2, Courrier International, Géo, La Vie, Air-France Magazine..), and foreign ones (Animan, Die Zeit, Luna Cornea, El Pais…). She partecipated in several exhibitions both in France and abroad : Rencontres de Braga (Portugal), Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nancy, Centre Atlantique de la Photographie de Brest, Galeries Photos FNAC, Biennale de Saint-Petersbourg (Russie), Festival " Arrêt sur Image " à Bordeaux, Festival " Chroniques Nomades à Honfleur... . Sophie just finished a colour work on Berlin’s ten most meaningful places of the " new " reconstruction. Sophie is now interested in Cambodia and work in the same time on industrial patrimony.
